Waterproof Deck for Basketball Legend Bill Walton
When a basketball legend needs a waterproof deck, you better deliver a slam dunk! San Diego native and former professional basketball player, Bill Walton, has a beautiful home with lush landscaping and an old deck that needed some attention.
Customizing a Waterproof Deck
The above grade deck was tiled and in bad shape. When a deck is not properly built it sets the stage for future problems. The tiles were cracked, the sloping was off, and the entire surface needed waterproofing.
Mike Tice of Bulldog Development General Contractors worked with Scott Tischler at Life Deck Coating Installations to troubleshoot and produce a solution for the 400 square foot deck. Due to the plywood substrate and nature of the deck, Scott knew that Westcoat’s ALX Custom Finish would be perfect for Bill’s home.
After demolishing the tile, sheet membrane and flashing was installed to prepare for the metal lath and basecoat. WP Wrap was installed along the perimeter to provide additional reinforced waterproofing. Slurry and texture coats followed, and our Water-Based Stain Blend, Tobacco, was applied for a neutral but stunning look. For added skid resistance, SC-70 Acrylic Lacquer Sealer was applied with a Safe Grip broadcast.

It is reinforced with metal lath and is installed with a series of four to five separate polymer-modified cementitious applications and sealed with one of Westcoat’s clear sealers. This system gives plywood the look and feel of slate, flagstone, or tile. Designed for use on plywood and ideal for areas with heavy traffic or in cases where elimination of plywood seams is essential. The ALX™ Custom Finish can be stapled through most old deck systems to provide an excellent method for the rehabilitation of problem surfaces.
