The Aston at University Place is known as one of the premier apartment complexes in Orem, Utah. Located just outside of Salt Lake City, Orem is home to Utah Valley University. Podium decks throughout the Aston property serve as courtyards or balcony decks for residents to BBQ and enjoy the mountain views but it’s what lies below the podium decks that the property managers were concerned about. With parking located beneath the podium decks, the need for a waterproof concrete solution was critical. ICO Construction brought in Westcoat applicator, E-Green Exteriors to install Westcoat’s MACoat waterproof concrete system with a custom finish to protect this new complex and create the appeal expected for luxury apartment residents.
Applying The MACoat Waterproof Concrete System
The process began with diamond grinding the plain concrete surface twice to ensure the best adhesion for the MACoat system. With many large structures, supports, and drains on the deck, E-Green Exteriors made sure to pay special attention to what can be troublesome areas. All expansion joints were honored and cracks were routed, filled with seam tape and EC-72 Fast Cure Epoxy Patch Gel where needed. Then WP-47 Fiberlath was laid down and the Base Coat applied. After the final texture coats were applied, the surface was stained with our Water-Based Stain Blend in Tobacco (follow link for color charts and more options). This color blend is created by using a base of TC-2 White Texture Cement blended with TC-40 Liquid Colorant in Cinnamon, and a mixture of water and SC-35 Water-based Stain in Mahogany. The surface was then sealed with SC-70 Acrylic Lacquer Concrete Sealer which is UV resistant, low VOC and creates the wet look requested by ICO. With 13,500 sq. ft of the first building complete, the other three buildings will follow with the final total square footage equaling 54,000 sq ft. Until the other decks are completed, the residents of the other buildings will likely be coming to this one for their barbecuing needs!
