Airplane and helicopter hangars shoulder a tremendous burden; they protect some of the most delicate, sensitive, and valuable machines that any person or company may own. Accordingly, the process of deciding on a particular hangar design and manufacturer is a serious decision which should not be taken lightly. There are a number of questions which need to be answered in order to ensure that the correct design is selected such as size, materials, environmental factors, and even permanency. It is up to each individual operator to determine their specific needs, and among those options, the floor should not be overlooked. especially when it comes to choosing a high build epoxy.
Recently our long-term distributor partner SSI was contacted to do a corporate hangar in north Texas. Our Regional Sales Manager, Kevin Ross, met with all parties involved and together the team developed a system spec and install plan to meet and exceed the customer’s expectations. Soon after the meeting, T.W. Hicks, Inc. was selected to be the preferred floor coatings installer for the project.
Airplane Hangar Challenges
The client needed a system that would offer a high build epoxy/poly floor in white with high gloss and reflection qualities. Along with these attributes they needed a product that would hide the existing floor stains.
The Solution – High Epoxy Build
TW Hicks got to work by shot blasting the existing concrete and diamond grinding to an approximate CSP 3. Once completed, they applied Aquafin SG3 per spec to control moisture vapor emissions. After SG3 was applied, the following Westcoat products were used:
EC-34 Epoxy Topcoat white (applied at approx. 80 sq. ft. per gallon)
EC-95 Polyurethane Topcoat white (applied at approx. 375 sq. ft. per gallon)
EC-95 (applied at approx. 450 sq. ft. per gallon as the final topcoat.)
