Calling All Pickleball Lovers!

Pickleball has become increasingly popular in the U.S. over the past few years. Due to this quickly growing demographic, public and residential areas have felt a need to cater to their visitors. A private shop toy barn in Kalispell, Montana, was one such area.

Westcoat Representative Mark Haen decided 11-10 Custom was the most suitable system for the 2000 square foot job, along with the use of EC-11 Water-Based Epoxy, SC-10 Acrylic Topcoat, and SC-65 Clear Water-Based Polyurethane Sealer.

Working alongside applicator Vernon Smith from 406 Epoxy/Smith Painting LLC., the floor was acid-washed as a quicker alternative to grinding and avoided corn rows from shot blasting. Troweling using Westcoat’s EC-11 Epoxy Primer helped eliminate any imperfections for easy application of the next coat, SC-10 Acrylic Topcoat. The pickleball court’s base colors and borders consisted of three different colors of SC-10 – gray, taupe, and red. As an experienced applicator, Mark helped provide 11-10 Custom to the area with some small deviations to produce the court’s line striping by utilizing frog tape as masking and SC-10 off-white for the line color. The tape left razor sharp lines when wiped with a damp rag first to activate its seal glue. With the court colors and lines completed, a coat of Clear SC-65G Water-Based Polyurethane Sealer followed by two coats of Clear SC-65F Polyurethane Sealer finished off the job.

During project application, there were issues with slippage in shoe spikes on the gloss coat, requiring a repaint of the red urethane coats. Applicators wore tennis shoes when putting on the final urethane coats. Every coat was well screened and vacuumed for optimum appearance.

With a brand-new pickleball court ready for play, this Montana toy shop barn will provide sporting entertainment for its future guests.
