We’re just two days away from the biggest event in sports. When Super Bowl LIII kicks off on Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams will attempt to be the latest team to push back against the dynasty that is the New England Patriots. Super Bowl LIII will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, home of the Falcons. It’ll be the first Super Bowl hosted at the stadium, which opened in 2017, where Westcoat helped find a waterproofing solution for the Atlanta Falcon Statue.
Atlanta Falcon Statue
In 2017, Atlanta built the $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the city’s most dazzling new work of outdoor art: an aggressive falcon sculpture comprised of thousands of stainless-steel pieces and a huge bronze football, standing about four stories tall and weighing 73,000 pounds.
The world-renowned artist, Gábor Miklós Szőke, was working with a specialty coating applicator to find a solution for the base of the statue. Unfornutaley, during the build of the podium, the contractor backed out, leaving Szőke, with no alternative options. The Sculptor reached out to Concrete Masters for a quick solution.
Once Concrete Masters understood the problem, they reached out to their Westcoat Architectural Representative, Matt Ranzau and explained that the base was constructed out of plywood and they needed a coating that would simulate concrete without the weight. Matt Ranzau knew how important the project was, and enlisted help from our President Paul Koury, and Darius Gross an Independent Concrete Coatings Specialist.
Falcon Statue Waterproofing Solution
After reviewing the specifications and speaking to the designer Gábor Miklós Szőke, they all agreed upon using ALX Waterproofing System as the coating over the 1,200 sq. ft podium base. This would ensure that the base would hold up against environmental issues, and add a nice design element.
The project needed to be fast-track, as the stadium was opening soon. Westcoat reached out to Matt Lawler, our distributor at BRP, to ensure delivery of Westcoat material. Our Architectural Representative and Darius Gross flew out to Atlanta to help assist Concrete Masters with the installation.
With the help of our distributor, applicator, and concrete coatings consultant, the statute was completed before opening day at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
