In early 2009 San Diego’s famous Corvette Diner restaurant was temporarily closed and moved from its Hill Crest location to the historic Liberty Station in Point Loma. Restaurant owner David Cohn, Owner of Cohn Restaurant Group, worked with designers and architects to reinvent his restaurant and was in the market for a durable and decorative epoxy floor to compliment the 1950’s essence of the diner.
Based on his previous experience working with Gil Koury of Life Deck Coating Installations in San Diego, Cohn contacted Gil during early construction to see if he could produce a decorative floor that could withstand busy restaurant traffic. Gil inspected the 10,000 square of concrete and selected a Westcoat epoxy system to deliver the desired finish. The existing concrete was in need of extensive preparation including scarifying and patching cracks with Westcoat’s EC-72 Epoxy Patch Gel. It was also coated with Westcoat’s Epoxy Slurry to level and smooth the substrate. Next, Gil worked with Design Perspectives of San Diego to design the floor patterns and select the black, white and custom pink colors to tint Westcoat’s EC-34 Epoxy. Decorative paint chips were also selected to be lightly broadcasted into the system before sealing it with Westcoat’s EC-31 Epoxy Clear Topcoat and EC-95 Polyurethane Topcoat for maximum gloss and protection.

Rayson Shizuru with Nevada Concrete Coatings installed this beautiful stain job in Nevada using Westcoat’s SC-36 Fast Stain in Brown and Light Brown. Rayson used Westcoat’s CA-60 Grout Tape to create grout lines and used an HVLP gravity feed spray, instead of masking, for precice color application. Rayson, who has sucessfully applied Westcoat’s Fast Stains on several projects says that “Playing around with the dilution ratios of the fast stain is a great way to come up with additional colors. Just be sure to document your new ratios!” The system was sealed with Westcoat’s EC-95 Polyurethane Topcoat for a durable, glossy finish. Flawless!

This Wine Cave, installed by Tony Merla of ifixconcrete in Santa Rosa, shows the work of a true concrete craftsman. Tony started by trowling Westcoat’s TC-2 cement across the concrete for a super smooth floor. He then buffed in various water-based stain colors to create a mottled look. Finally the system was sealed with Westcoat’s EC-31 Epoxy Clear Topcoat and Westcoat’s EC-96 Satin Polyurethane Topcoat.

Based on his extensive experience with Westcoat epoxies, applicator Kevin Ross of Coating Pros installed 1500 sq. ft. of Liquid Dazzle in the main commercial lobby area, kitchen, juice bar, six restrooms, as well as the lab and doctor’s office. During the construction process, Ross began by moisture testing the concrete, followed by shot blasting, grinding edges, and patching all holes with Westcoat’s EC-72. Once properly prepped, the floor was primed with EC-12 Clear and leveled with EC-34 Travatan. Finally, after precise masking to achieve a detailed pattern, EC-38 Liquid Dazzle was installed in Cafe, Jade, and Sunset and then sealed with EC-95 Satin for maximum durability.
