In early 2009 San Diego’s famous Corvette Diner restaurant was temporarily closed and moved from its Hill Crest location to the historic Liberty Station in Point Loma. Restaurant owner David Cohn, Owner of Cohn Restaurant Group, worked with designers and architects to reinvent his restaurant and was in the market for a durable and decorative epoxy floor to compliment the 1950’s essence of the diner.
Based on his previous experience working with Gil Koury of Life Deck Coating Installations in San Diego, Cohn contacted Gil during early construction to see if he could produce a decorative floor that could withstand busy restaurant traffic. Gil inspected the 10,000 square of concrete and selected a Westcoat epoxy system to deliver the desired finish. The existing concrete was in need of extensive preparation including scarifying and patching cracks with Westcoat’s EC-72 Epoxy Patch Gel. It was also coated with Westcoat’s Epoxy Slurry to level and smooth the substrate. Next, Gil worked with Design Perspectives of San Diego to design the floor patterns and select the black, white and custom pink colors to tint Westcoat’s EC-34 Epoxy. Decorative paint chips were also selected to be lightly broadcasted into the system before sealing it with Westcoat’s EC-31 Epoxy Clear Topcoat and EC-95 Polyurethane Topcoat for maximum gloss and protection.
Corvette Diner is now open for business! Stop by to check out the awesome food and the beautiful floors!

Rayson Shizuru with Nevada Concrete Coatings installed this beautiful stain job in Nevada using Westcoat’s SC-36 Fast Stain in Brown and Light Brown. Rayson used Westcoat’s CA-60 Grout Tape to create grout lines and used an HVLP gravity feed spray, instead of masking, for precice color application. Rayson, who has sucessfully applied Westcoat’s Fast Stains on several projects says that “Playing around with the dilution ratios of the fast stain is a great way to come up with additional colors. Just be sure to document your new ratios!” The system was sealed with Westcoat’s EC-95 Polyurethane Topcoat for a durable, glossy finish. Flawless!

This Wine Cave, installed by Tony Merla of ifixconcrete in Santa Rosa, shows the work of a true concrete craftsman. Tony started by trowling Westcoat’s TC-2 cement across the concrete for a super smooth floor. He then buffed in various water-based stain colors to create a mottled look. Finally the system was sealed with Westcoat’s EC-31 Epoxy Clear Topcoat and Westcoat’s EC-96 Satin Polyurethane Topcoat.

Westcoat’s Liquid Dazzle Epoxy was specified for the newly constructed North County Oral Surgery Center in San Diego, due to its durability and unique decorative features.
Based on his extensive experience with Westcoat epoxies, applicator Kevin Ross of Coating Pros installed 1500 sq. ft. of Liquid Dazzle in the main commercial lobby area, kitchen, juice bar, six restrooms, as well as the lab and doctor’s office. During the construction process, Ross began by moisture testing the concrete, followed by shot blasting, grinding edges, and patching all holes with Westcoat’s EC-72. Once properly prepped, the floor was primed with EC-12 Clear and leveled with EC-34 Travatan. Finally, after precise masking to achieve a detailed pattern, EC-38 Liquid Dazzle was installed in Cafe, Jade, and Sunset and then sealed with EC-95 Satin for maximum durability.

One Source Coatings of San Diego, CA just completed a beautiful job over at the “Side Bar” in downtown San Diego. The system installed in the 2,000 sf bar was Westcoat’s ALX waterproofing system with Liquid Dazzle over the top. Westcoat’s San Diego Sales Representative Marc DiZinno went by the job last week and said it looked great. Great job guys!

It’s always exciting to see specifications calling for your products. Creative Design Associates choose Westcoat’s ALX waterproofing system for a condominium project in West Covina, California. Great News!

Westcoat’s Epoxy Demo on Thursday, May 14th, was a great success. Over 50 applicators and distributors showed up to partake in the training, which included detailed information on the installation processes of:
- Westcoat’s Thin Film Systems
- Westcoat’s Liquid Granite and Terrazzo
- Westcoat’s Liquid Dazzle
- Westcoat’s Industrial Epoxies
They also got to observe an exclusive sneak peek of two new innovative epoxy systems that are in the production process .
The demo was hosted by Kevin Ross, of Coating Pros, who was formally a Westcoat Sales Representative. Westcoat President Paul Koury, choose Kevin to present because he considers him “one of the few experts in the epoxy industry”. There was a good mix of attendees, from local San Diego applicators, to applicators and distributors on the East Coast. Guests were given tours around the shop to observe the array of different coating systems installed in-house and also were treated to breakfast and the ever-so popular lunch by the “Taco Man”.
Overall, the event was a great success. We hope to see as many people, if not more, out for our Surface Coat Demo August 21st. Check out some shots of the demo below:

In Las Vegas, a new Moxie Java Coffeehouse was in need of a flooring solution that matched the elegance of real granite or marble, without the added cost. Contractor Rayson Shizuru and his team from Nevada Concrete Coatings were chosen to perform the installation of a surface coating that would achieve this desired look.
Rayson started by diamond polishing the concrete in the dining area to 1600 grit. Westcoat’s Fast Stain “Black” was applied directly to the concrete, neat and diluted 4:1 in a checkered pattern (shown right), to achieve a look similar to the Lamborghini show room at the Wynn Casino. The surface was then densified and burnished to create a polished finish.
In the kitchen area, Westcoat’s Epoxy Gel was used to fill in the joints in order to meet USDA standards. The area was then coated with TC-8 Cement to create an even surface before the application of the Fast Stain. Finally, the system was sealed with EC-12 and EC-95 to create a durable but decorative finish.
“I believe we exceeded the owner’s (Wade and Cheryl Yeeley’s) expectations.”, says Rayson. “They were not familiar with polished concrete or the use of overlays in conjunction with clear epoxies.” Rayson and his team were faced with some job challenges, such as time constraints and working near other trades however, they were able to create the high-end decorative look that the owners wanted, without the cost of real stone.
